Baby Boomers are Taking to the Road - Spurring an RV Motor Home Boom
July 24th, 2008
Since the Baby Boomers have hit retirement age, we have seen RV Motor Home Sales really explode.
Since the Baby Boomers have hit retirement age, we have seen RV Motor Home Sales really explode. Over the last few years, the numbers of mobile homes and RV parks have more than doubled.
• More RV's are now owned by Baby Boomers than any other group. This is the fastest growing segment of the RV market (RVIA, October 2004) • Baby Boomers want to expand our experiences of this country by visiting the famous attractions as well as the hidden treasures of our rural byways." says Hal Norvell of AARP.
The Baby Boomers are once again making our "muscle" felt, just as we have done since 1946. Every era we enter, we profoundly change the paradigm of life. Now that we are reaching the empty nest/retirement era, we are once again changing the scene. No longer is retirement viewed as golf and the rocking chair. Today's Baby Boomers are still actively "rocking" and will continue to do so as long as our bodies and psyches hold out - which we expect to be a very, very long time.
The fact is we Baby Boomers spend more on ourselves than our parents ever did. Our parents were survivors of the Great Depression and World War II. Their goal was saving money, not spending it. This Baby Boomer Generation, including myself, goes on the idea that we only live once and we may as well enjoy it.
• Baby Boomers rank travel as our number one expenditure in retirement (Del Webb Study, 2001) • 45% of adults said they wanted to travel within the USA (USA Today, February 22, 2001) • About half of us are planning to spend our newfound disposable income on travel, according the Del Webb.
All of the research evidence points to and extraordinary number of Baby Boomers' travel dreams include taking to the highways of our country for longer explorations of our varied interests. Some of us are trading it all in to live "on the road" permanently. Others of us may be taking it more slowly - but are road trip dreaming of that long vacation postponed during our working years.
RVs are getting bigger and more luxurious with every new model. Gone are the days of pop up campers or truck campers. Trailer campers are nowhere near as popular as they once were. Baby Boomers want the big motor home. Home away from home is what we want. Television, microwave ovens, laundry facilities, and air conditioning are all necessities.
