Baby Boomer Generation is Pushing RV Ownership to Record High
April 20th, 2008
A growing number of Baby Boomers have pushed the number of RV owners to record levels, often giving up our 3,000 square foot homes to become full-time roadies in a 400 square foot recreational vehicle.
Almost 385,000 RV's were sold in 2005, making nearly 8 million households that now own a Recreational Vehicle (RV) in 2005. That's a 58 percent increase from 1980. A growing number of Baby Boomers have pushed the number of RV owners to record levels, often giving up our 3,000 square foot homes to become full-time roadies in a 400 square foot recreational vehicle.
Older generations saw RV living as escaping from society by those who didn't want to hold down a job. It was a substitute living and a cheap way to get by in parts that weren't very nice. More often than not, today's RV'ers are not the type who prefer sipping beer in front of the campfire, roughing it in communal showers in lieu of a nine to five job. It's totally different today. For Baby Boomers RV ownership is all about luxury.
The typical new RV owner is becoming a Baby Boomer in our late 40's and 50's, owns a home, has an annual income of $68,000 and travels an average 4,500 miles a year. We are a very affluent group, compared to the general population and very computer literate.
The Baby Boomer Generation has the money and enough technology, not only stay in touch with family and friends but to actually continue to pursue our careers and even run an office while living full time on the road. Thanks to Wi-Fi, satellite Internet hookups, e-mail and cell phones, Baby Boomers can effectively continue running our businesses from our RV's, from just about anywhere in the United States. We like the idea of sitting in the Florida Keys with our satellite dish hooked up and working like we were in our office in San Jose - going out for walks on the beach at night.
