Baby boomers will physically age like everyone else, but we are mavericks in our expectations, and we have cultivated high aesthetic standards. Even the broom closet should look good. High design for less cost will be the defining feature of our home plan requirements. Aging Baby Boomers will not be afraid to move into a better home, at any stage in our life. We will not shrink under the excitement and challenges of home remodeling, more than one time during our golden years.
Baby boomers are energy conscious. We will design, build, or buy high efficiency homes and appliances, without sacrificing aesthetics. A stainless steel water-conserving silent dishwasher will replace noisy water-hogs in many of our new homes.
Home designs must include green thinking, without sacrificing convenience and beauty. Low-toxin paints, recycled sunflower seed counter-tops, plenty of daylight, and an abundance of surge-protected electrical outlets will be some of the highlights in useful home designs for the Baby Boomers.
Homes designed with multi-purpose rooms in mind. No formal living rooms with plastic-covered furniture will be sealed off from daily use. Instead, Baby Boomers will want a place for our laptop computers in the kitchen with built-ins to hide computer cords, scanners, and photo paper. We will do crafts on the dining room table with our grandkids, will watch DVDs in the tub, and will want to plug our portable music players into quality garden speakers.
The Baby Boomer Generation will need to provide the feeling of a quiet retreat, as well as a warm welcome to grown kids, grandkids and friends. We don't want to and won't spend time polishing and dusting. Easy to clean, sunlit rooms will be home-design priorities.
Remember that Baby Boomers are vacation homeowners too. We need secure homes, for the weekends we are at the cabin, or the beach cottage. High tech security systems that are user-friendly will meet our need for feeling secure in a world we keep highly aware off.
Make our new and remodeled homes beautiful and spacious. Use green materials and clean lines for us environmentally conscious, life-loving Baby Boomers. Consider technology and places to store digital cameras and computers safely. Wine cellars and archive rooms will no longer be only for the rich, but will be added to basements if designs are good and cost is low.
We baby boomers are conscientious and picky, busy and family-oriented, and we will age in a new way, connected to modernity, with an eye to beauty, high design, easy maintenance and energy efficiency.
