Baby Boomers Rock Troops With Classic Rock 'N Roll CD - Part 2

May 27th, 2008
The Story of Rocking Our Troops (Part 2) With The Invictas Red White Blue & True CD - - - - - - - - [Article by Herb Gross]

In my earlier article I had told the story of how I had a song rattling around in my brain for about a year entitled Red White Blue & True.  We had recorded the song, made arrangements for the pressing of and I wanted to give the CD’s to our soldiers.

I would need help.

When the CD’s arrived at my home in Charlotte NC,  I was surprised to see there were several large boxes and I’d also have to haul a CD player.  How could I handle all this stuff by myself?

To the rescue came Arroe Collins a neighbor of mine who is a DJ with the Clear Channel Radio stations.   Arroe loves music, does radio shows throughout North and South Carolina and he asked if I could use help?  I immediately said…YES!  By the way, Arroe thinks there’s a large market for the 60’s rock ‘n roll sound of The Invictas.  I of course agree!

We left our homes about 7 AM and headed for the USO headquarters at the Charlotte NC airport. The USO had everything the soldiers could ask for including video games, food and drinks, an area where they could relax, and there were lots of people helping them make it to their flights.  I was amazed at how well they handled the details and treated the soldiers.  Arroe and I had a lot of fun talking with the soldiers, taking pictures and we even met a general.

I was also surprised at how polite and young looking the soldiers were.  They reminded me of how young all of us in the band looked when we were playing during the 60’s.   The soldiers greeted me with a yes sir, most of them said they loved classic rock n roll.  It made me proud to know we had such fine young people in the service.

What’s the song Red White Blue & True all about?
Here are some of the lyrics.

“ I’m red white and blue… and true… I love this country ya …how about you?  From sea to shining sea this country knocks me out…who could ask for more, it’s got everything you want..  I’m red white and blue…and I’m true

I wasn’t born here, but I’m here to stay… I wouldn’t live in any other place, when my parents moved here they pledged allegiance to the flag, they believed in this country and I feel the same way…that’s why I’m red white and blue…and I’m true

I don’t like taxes, but I’ll pay my fair share…I don’t want a free ride, I wouldn’t even dare I’ll salute our troops proudly every day…without them, I’ll tell ya… we’d be in a real bad way”

We successfully handed out several hundred CD’s to our soldiers and they really seemed to appreciate receiving the music.

About The Invictas

During the 60’s The Invictas, based in Rochester NY, had fan clubs, police escorts and a controversial hit record known as The Hump.  The Hump was number one in cities from Buffalo to Miami and a few years ago we put the band back together. The band has played with the Beach Boys, been on The TODAY Show and appeared in media across the country.

So my project to get music to our troops has been completed but there will be more.  I’d like to create a TV show for boomers, and of course I’m always looking for places where the Invictas can rock the boomers.
