Baby Boomers Celebrate Opening of Woodstock Museum at Bethel Woods [VIDEOS]

April 3rd, 2008
[VIDEOS] Baby Boomers will be exploring the unique experience of the Woodstock Festival through the Spring 2008 Opening of the Museum at Bethel Woods.

Scheduled for a spring 2008 opening, The Museum at Bethel Woods explores the unique experience of the Woodstock Festival, its significance as the culminating event of a decade of radical cultural transformation, and the legacies of the Sixties and Woodstock today.

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is being built on top of the hill near where the Woodstock Festival stage was located. The main pavilion covers 4,800 seats with another 12,000 on a natural sloping lawn, while offering unique backdrops including the original festival site and the majesty of the surrounding Sullivan County countryside.

The Woodstock festival was billed as "three days of peace and love," and drew about 500,000 people to the natural amphitheater on Max Yasgur's farm. The festival exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the "hippie era." Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes-rainy weekend. Aside from the drugs, mud and rain, there were career-defining performances by Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Janice Joplin and myriad others.

Although attempts have been made over the years to recreate the Woodstock festival, the original event has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll. Thousands of Baby Boomers still visit the site each year, where a stone monument is currently the only marker.

The Museum at Bethel Woods is an impressive facility with over 10,000 square feet of permanent exhibit space, a special exhibit gallery, event space and museum retail store. Other venues at the center include a 1,000-seat roman-style outdoor amphitheater, craft and farmers' market and the original Woodstock site, which holds a permit for 30,000 concertgoers to attend major musical events. The arts center's purpose is to improve the quality of life in Sullivan County and the surrounding region by promoting economic development in an economically depressed area of NYS through arts, education, and culture at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

Announcements of the 2008 performances and event schedule begin in early spring. Find a current list of shows at Bethel Woods or call the Bethel Woods Information Line 1-866-781-2922. Sign-up for the E-Club and receive accurate and up-to-the minute concert information.
